Saturday, January 18, 10 am–12 pm
On Saturday, January 18, 2020, Asbury First will host the Rev. Dr. Mark Holland, the executive director of Mainstream UMC. Dr. Holland is coming to the Northeast to raise awareness and funds to advocate for an expression of Methodism that honors LGBTQ+ persons in marriage and ministry. Beginning at 10 am, Dr. Holland will speak on the current state of the UMC, the plans going before the 2020 General Conference in May, and the work of Mainstream UMC. Following his presentation, he will leave plenty of time for questions. Mainstream UMC was founded in 2018 to help pass the “One Church Plan” at the 2019 Special Session of the General Conference. Since that plan failed and the punitive Traditional Plan passed, Mainstream UMC has become a leading voice of protest and advocacy within the denomination. Rev. Dr. Stephen Cady joined the advisory board of Mainstream UMC last winter and is pleased to welcome Dr. Holland to Asbury First. All are welcome at this free and formative event.
